Mount Saint Nicholas

Mount Saint Nicholas on the left

Mount Saint Nicholas is the most rugged mountain and most difficult climb in Glacier. This awe-inspiring matterhorn is only visible from a few stretches of road along Highway 2 on the southern border of the park, if you know where to look that is. Oddly enough, the peak is not named after Father Christmas, but after a popular youth magazine of the early 20th century. Among the contributors to this magazine was James Willard Schulz, the man most credited with helping the U.S. Board of Geographic Names decide on official names for features in Glacier National Park.
