The Red Cathedral forms the northern wall of Golden Canyon. Made up of a harder rock layer from a previous alluvial fan, it rises hundreds of feet above the mudstone badlands surrounding Golden Canyon and Zabriskie Point. A spur trail off of the Golden Canyon trail leads through the golden-hued badlands to the fluted walls of the Red Cathedral, offering a sudden and striking contrast in surroundings.
