Jayhawker Canyon is named after a group of settlers from Kansas who were probably the first European-American explorers in the area. After being trapped for an unexpected amount of time, the Jayhawkers used this very canyon to finally escape the deadly heat of Death Valley in 1848. In the canyon, far up-canyon from the paved roads, a rock inscription reads a list of names and the year 1848.
